Getting Started with NAACOS Connect on Telegram: A Quick Guide

Telegram is a free messaging app you can use on your phone or computer. We’re using it as a simple, flexible way to stay in touch—no more digging through email threads!

Here’s how to get set up and join the conversation. This brief video covers installation on a Mac then on a PC at the 1:11 minute mark. 

1. Download the Telegram App

You can use Telegram on your smartphone, tablet, or computer.

On a phone or tablet:

  • Go to the App Store (iPhone/iPad) or Google Play Store (Android)
  • Search for Telegram and download the official app (blue paper airplane icon)

On a computer:

  • Download the desktop app from Telegram Desktop.
  • Click on Get Telegram for Windows. (Telegram is also available for MacOS.)

2. Create an Account

  • Open the app and tap Start Messaging
  • Enter your phone number (Telegram uses this to connect your account)
  • You’ll receive a text message with a code—enter it to verify
  • Add your name and (optional) profile photo

💡 Tip: You can choose to create a username in the Settings tab. While not required, it can make it easier for others to find you.

3. Join the Group or Channel

If you signed up for the NAACOS channel, you will receive an email invitation with a link to join. Just tap or click it! If you haven’t yet been added or did not receive the email, please contact [email protected]

  • On your phone: the Telegram app will open and prompt you to Join Group or Join Channel
  • On your computer: it may open in your browser first—click Open in Telegram or Join

4. Start Chatting!

  • Type your message in the box at the bottom and hit send
  • To reply to someone, tap their message and select Reply
  • You can react to messages with emojis (just tap and hold the message)

💡 Quick Tip: How to Search Within a Telegram Channel
Looking for a past post or topic? You can easily search a channel without scrolling forever.

  • Use the arrows to jump through matching messages.
  • Open the channel where you want to search.
  • Tap the three dots in the top right corner (or the channel name, depending on your device).
  • Tap Search.
  • Type a keyword or phrase (like “meeting notes” or “resources”).

5. Customize Your Notifications (Optional)

  • Tap the group or channel name at the top
  • Choose Notifications and set your preferences (e.g., mute alerts, only get mentions, etc.)

FAQs

Q: Do others see my phone number?
A: No—only your name and photo are visible in group chats unless someone already has your number saved.

Q: Do I have to use the phone app only?
A: No! Use it in any browser at https://web.telegram.org.
